Creative freedom, technical depth
As the creator of Free WP Builders, I had a relatively rare opportunity to take full creative ownership of a web project — from the initial visual direction and UX concepts to the technical architecture and virtually every custom solution required to bring the platform to life.
Working within existing technical and financial constraints, I was responsible for defining how the platform should look, feel, behave, and function. This included designing an interface specifically for a technically oriented audience, developing the underlying content architecture, and finding practical solutions for complex requirements that could not be addressed through standard WordPress functionality alone.
Technically, this is the most demanding web project I have worked on to date.
My role
My involvement covered the entire process of designing, developing, and optimizing the platform, including:
UI/UX & Design
- Designing a visual language tailored specifically to a developer-oriented audience
- Creating, testing, and refining the overall UI/UX
- Designing user flows around large amounts of structured and dynamically connected information
Content Architecture & WordPress Development
- Planning and creating Custom Post Types (CPTs) and Custom Fields (ACF) connected through complex relationships
- Building systems for displaying and filtering relationship-based data
- Creating custom query filters for dynamically generated content
- Developing an optimized backend workflow for fast and efficient data entry
- Automating data entry, including automatic post title generation and other repetitive tasks
Search, Filtering & Navigation
- Integrating Elementor Loop Grids with FacetWP filtering and pagination
- Building a custom search system combining Elementor, FacetWP, and Relevanssi
- Creating advanced filtering and querying mechanisms for large volumes of interconnected content
- Developing a custom visitor watchlist system, allowing users to save software and other content without requiring a membership or user account
SEO & Content Automation
- Implementing automated SEO generation through a combination of Yoast SEO settings and custom code
- Creating an automated system for generating multiple canonical tags for previously entered posts as part of software versioning
- Automating news distribution to the site’s X account
- Automating post generation through a combination of Automatic plugin workflows and AI tools
Software & Version Management
- Developing a system for maintaining multiple available versions of individual software products
- Making specific software versions dynamically available from their respective single software pages
- Creating software group systems that can be assigned to and displayed from individual software pages
- Building the underlying relationships and logic required to keep these systems manageable from the WordPress backend
Performance & Infrastructure
- Developing a complex caching architecture for a site containing a large amount of dynamic and relationship-based data
- Integrating the website with Cloudflare and customizing its caching behavior
- Creating an automated system for detecting and removing dead PPD links
Privacy & Compliance
- Implementing GDPR-related configuration and compliance requirements
The result
The result is not simply a WordPress website assembled from existing components, but a custom-built content platform in which the design, content architecture, relationships, search, filtering, automation, SEO, version management, and performance systems were designed to work together as a single ecosystem.
For me, the project represents a combination of creative freedom, complex problem-solving, WordPress engineering, and UX design — with virtually every major part of the platform requiring a solution tailored specifically to its purpose.
